Review of Pop Team Epic
The show is a mish-mash of short skits, small gags, and odd music videos all of which are highly referential or incredibly odd and out there. It wields pop-culture, memes, and tropes with the delicacy of a man beating your head in with a baseball bat. This is it's greatest strength, but also it's greatest weakness. If you have at least minor credentials in online shit-posting, Japanese and Western genres, memes and culture then Pop Team Epic will probably be a delight to you. But if you aren't at least somewhat versed in these things then many of the jokes will pass you byand seem like pure randomness. Even when you do have an extensive knowledge in all things Pop-Culture sometimes the jokes stray a bit too far into random territory or pure reference with no twist to make it interesting.
The show however is always fast paced and fun and if one part doesn't bring you a smile or laugh you won't have to wait long for the next attempt.
I think the show truly comes alive during genre skits. These are usually longer sections where the show picks a genre of film or show and embraces it's tropes while poking fun at them. It's a nice little dissection where you get to see a genre taken to it's silliest and strangest extremes.
If you enjoy meta-humor, references and strangeness then this is a great show for you.
