Do not let the warm and soft ghibli like visuals lull you into a false sense of safety. This is a hauntingly bittersweet story about the brutality of war and the quiet creeping devastation it brings. Inspired by the tragic real-life Himeyuri students known as “Lily Corps”. The story is set in April-June of 1945 in Japan during the Battle of Okinawa in WWII. It follows these female nursing students as they are positioned on the front lines and burdened with life-threatening duties under constant gunfire and bombings. The gentle art makes the brutality hit harder because it violates the safety that you expect from thestyle.
The “I couldn’t bear to be a soldier” echoes the crushed voices of young people who are forced into military duty. It’s raw regret and helplessness.
The Title is metaphorical and symbolizes fragility, feminine purity, and the emotional toll of the surrounding war. It also represents resilience and hope.
