Review of Horimiya
A feast for the eye but a tasteless crap for the mind best describe this anime. Horimiya is filled with amazing art , sound , music , voice actor and etc but did badly in one thing - its writing. The story of horimiya is straight out terrible for a romcom show. The confussing skipping and focus on side character’s love life hurts the coherence of the main story so much. The characters are also outright terrible , the combination of terrible writing of the story and characters made this anime a slight pain in the arse to watch . The personality of themain heroine and some of the female side characters were straight out terrible. Don’t get me started on Hori man… the story try to potray her as a kind yet fearsome women but all I get is a textbook example of “ the prettier the girl is , the crazier she is” from the show.
Miyamura is another one , the story tries to paint him as a loner with a sad background since day 1 . From the first episode to the last episode , the story can’t help but to shove his ‘sad loner past’ down the viewers throat. There’s no character development at all for this dude , everything just fall in place for him since the start of the story of the anime .It’s just fate after fate after fate man… . This goes for many of the characters and their stories in this anime , coincidence / fate are what keeps the story progressing.
There are many aspect of the story and its characters that I don’t like and the pacing and direction of the story only made it much worse. However , other from that this anime is really a feast for the eye and ear.
You can have the best animation , sound , voice actor/actress, music , character design in all of the anime created thus far but with a bland and terrible plot , the anime will still not be great . Fundamentally a slice of life romcom manga with a headless chicken plot and terrible character writing can’t be saved no matter how glamorous the end product looks , since the essence of it is rotten to the core .
