Review of Chainsaw Man
My expectations of the Chainsaw Man were fairly low, despite many people who praises the anime before and during the airing. I was certain that CSM wouldn't be my favorite anime of all time. But after the airing the hype and the glory died down, and the score dramatically slumped. Eventually I started watching the good anime (not an overhype show). And I can say that the anime is staggering. I noticed that a demon theme in anime recently became popular and CSM isn't an exception. The people are good and the demons are mostly evil. It's oversimplifying but it's still holds true. Nonetheless, it fits12 ep anime and you can waste free time on other aspects like characters.
Almost every character is colorful and astounding. The main character is dull and it isn't even an affront. The low intelligence of Denji differs from the common stupidity of other dump anime characters. He is aware about his flaws and accept them. He is just a plain man, who wants to be satiated and strokes some boobs. The characters don't become interesting because of their past, but because the events they live through. I don't watch shounens regularly, but this one definitely stands out. Other shounens have a common pattern: an antagonist confronts obstacles and overcomes it. And that repeats time and time again. Sometime even a villain stay unscathed. And CSM takes after the pattern for some time, but before long THIS happens. Afterwards every battle become intense and lives of everyone are on stake.
The production quality is insane. The music, the visual, the direction are made by shedding tears and sweat. The anime use much cg even in not action scenes though. To be honest I don't mind, but some people can't stand it by default. In addition, CSM has 12 different endings with different ost, different art, and different direction. I think it's enough to describe the quality.
A drawback may sound wretched, but it comprises only 12 episodes. Those 12 episodes feel like a base to next season. In this season the main purpose is set up, the characters are set up, the world building is set up. And -it's gone- it ended. However, it is not a cliffhanger, so the ending is still solid.
Fortunately, I hadn't any expectations, so there is nothing to shatter. CSM is a popular manga and because of that the adaptation got so much attention. However, the anime spans only part of it and doesn't disclose a full potential. Thus the only thing that remains is waiting for the next season.
