Review of Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro
This new genre of romcom where the girl teases the boy she likes endlessly is great. I think it's a quick an easy way for the protagonist to gain a lot of sympathy points with the audience to just make him the punching bag. I hate the "woe is me" type of protagonist where they aren't good with talking to people and then they blame all their problems on others. I think it's great when boring antisocial archetypes get beat up on in-universe just as much as I want to beat them up as a viewer. Bring them down a few pegs to the realworld, where being antisocial is just another way of saying being selfish.
I love Nagatoro as a character as well. She's got all the appearances of the popular girl, a full on tan girl gyaru with a posse of other tan girl gyaru's who make fun of forever virgins like our protagonist. But then she gets those tsundere moments where her real feelings peak through just a bit, and you start to remember that the only reason a girl would bully a guy so much is probably because she likes him. Her feelings become more and more obvious to everyone who isn't the protagonist, and by the end of the season I think even he has to realize what's going on.
Now there were controversies with the show that I couldn't care less about, they don't affect your viewing experience. If anything it makes me happy that there are people who really hated this show with such vitriol, because it means it must be doing something right. 9/10 really enjoyable
