Review of [Oshi No Ko]
This series to contrasts a bright, cheerful surface that idols show whilst hiding the darker undertones of showbiz and their daily lives. I think I'd recommend this series to people that like shows with similar layered dystopian themes that start off light-hearted but gets more and more tragic as the story develops. I guess there's a number of shows like this. The setting here is about idols and showbiz, but I feel it doesn't quite matter in that it can vary between shows. So people that enjoy shows like "Mahou Shoujo Madoka", "Angel Beats", "Your Lie in April" would probably like this. Strengths: Art and Animation. It's beautiful. Look at the those eyes, and the color and the shadings of their hair, their expressions, and how it changes to convey the mood. I like the character designs too. As for the characters themselves, I think they were quite multi-dimensional, relatable, and they were mostly interesting to follow. I like how the characters carried the story along, and their interactions were really nice.
Weaknesses: I think the problem for me was that after the first amazing episode which had so much going on and established what felt-like a whole movie length drama centered around Ai, that seems to really dissipate or slow down after the first ep. I can understand that the first ep was an actual movie and the rest is a follow-up, but still I felt it could have been tied together better. The follow-up eps focused more on side-stories and introducing new characters, but it didn't feel like it really progressed the main plot surrounding Ai. If I had to recommend a series that does this well, I'd say look at AOT.
Another minor thing was that since the story was so character-driven, a lot of this took place in the form of dialogue, so really not much action was taking place. As another reviewer put it: this could have literally been on audiobook. Ok well maybe not that extreme, but still, character interaction can take place more dynamically. I'd say Toradora does this better
Conclusion: Yes well uh... I still gave a 9/10 cause I really like these type of shows that gives me all the feels :')
