Review of Parasyte: The Maxim
OK story - but Tokyo Ghoul made more of a similar concept. First of all, although the story is not exactly the same as Tokyo Ghoul, not even close for that matter, the outcome of the infliction is still very similar. Humans become not humans and further more, some of these non humans become more powerful than others. A very redeeming feature of this story is the protagonist. I find that Shinichi’s character allows the story to remain engaging and with the addition of Migi, makes him all the more likeable. It enables you to really root for the character throughout and enables you tofinish the anime comfortably without regret.
However, there are a few issues I have that seem to be contrary to the hype. Firstly the animation is just OK. That’s it. And considering it is Madhouse at the helm, I would expect better. It’s just OK. You are subject to static characters with the parasitic limb moving in a very uninteresting way. I can’t quite find the right analogy, but whatever the right analogy is, the meaning is simply....just OK.
The story again follows a similar vein. It’s just not really engaging and by the time you have drawn that conclusion you’re at the point in the series where you may as well just continue. It starts off reasonably interesting, plateaus, then just doesn’t improve. All in all it’s again....just OK.
If you have exhausted what you believe to be the cream of the crop of anime, give it a go. It may surprise you. Otherwise, leave this towards the bottom of your ‘to watch’ list as although it is...just OK, some of you may find it entertaining enough to 1, stick it out and maybe 2, actually enjoy it.
I very much doubt however this will be in anyone’s top 20 for those who have watched more than 20.
