Review of Devilman: Crybaby
First timer here so bear with me on this inevitably cringy, badly worded review(dont forget the horrific grammar). Devilman Crybaby is...well.......Fantastic, its a show that has made me legitimately ponder over our potential for cruelty and our potential for compassion, the story was so powerful to me that it made me cry twice on my 1st viewing, and once more on my 2nd. The Story is extremely well told, deep and above all else memorable with my only nitpick(and what keeps it from being a 10) is that the final few episode are way too fast paced, and skip some very interesting ideas, i wish were betterexplored, the overall story wouldve been improved if just 1 or 2 more episodes were added, that being said its nothing that ruins the story, just some small missed opportunities.
The Animation is stylistic, pops and allows Studio "Science Saru" to show what their capable of, truly proving that its sometimes better to have something be artistically timeless rather than putting painstaking detail onto each character. The animation was so excellent that i remembered each character design after just one look, even the less important characters look great, its truly an amazing ,new direction from the 1972 mangas style. That being said however, their are times were the character models look.....outright goofy, unintentionally goofy but still....goofy, their are certain cut corners(like some characters dont have a face drawn on them when the cameras a good distance from them)
The Sound is perfection, from the many twisted demon sounds, the screams of fear, the cries of despair, the exceptional ost(which i listen to on a very regular basis) the fantastic voice acting from both the japanese and english casts, i literally have no problems with the sound in this show.
The Characters all range from memorable to downright amazing, whether it be the good hearted nature of our protagonist Akira, his mysterious best friend Ryo to even the anime exclusive characters Miko and Koda who are so well characterized that they fit right in, i wish i could say more but than i would enter spoiler territory.
Overall i have to say, this might be my favourite anime of all time, as already mentioned it made me really question human nature and forced me to ask some truly frightening questions...no anime has ever done that to me before and for that i must give Devilman Crybaby the credit that i feel it deseves. Truly this is director Masaki Yuasas magnum opus and makes a fine example of animations artistic capability.
