Review of The Ancient Magus' Bride
If you are expecting a super cheesy story with adventurous quests and dislikeable witches/wizards, you'd be disappointed! Mahoutsukai no Yome is a story of seeking forgiveness (for yourself and from others), embracing imperfections and understanding others. The storyline is slow yet steady! The character development was great and it somehow justifies the pace of the series. One of the best that I have encountered. Of course, I was hoping for a 50-episodes series but the ending is good enough for me! Personally, I love European theme/setting (in this series, the setting is at the outskirts of London, I guess). Moreover, if it's the historical setting. Althoughthe story does not really put strong emphasis on historical European setting, I still love the fantasy and magical elements of Mahoutsukai no Yome. At some parts of the series, you'd realise that, 'hey, isn't this like Harry Potter or Merlin?' but that makes me even happier!
The main characters are Chise and Elias, but trust me, you'd love all the supporting characters. There are countless powerful lines that will make you ponder about life. Certain encounters in the story are very meaningful! And the best thing is... everyone is a hero and villain as the plotline really makes the effort to probe into the characters' perspectives.
Overall, I am truly satisfied with the story! Initially, I was a bit uncomfortable with the idea of a hundred-years mage having a fifteen-year-old young lady as his bride. However, as I watched the story, I noticed that there is nothing fearful or disturbing at all. It is simply about... acceptance and growth. Truly worth it! ^^
