Review of Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale
Despite the overwhelmingly negative comments on the movie that I have seen on social media concerning the movie, I honestly feel that it is ill-deserved feedback. Throughout the entire series, Reki has explored multiple disputed concepts on ethics regarding technology, and this movie is no different. His storytelling has usually been fairly well thought out, and is often willing to write about what other would prefer to sweep under the carpet, ie Japan's military relationship with the US, or about discrimination of people who have committed act of strong violence even in self-defense. In this movie, he explores the ethics of creating a bottom-up AI throughthe creation of YUNA, and the possible consequences. Even if the ending was pretty botched, the revising of the more classic moves of the previous series does give a fairly good ending to leading up to the final fight.
All in all, this movie would be a little of a trip down memory lane for those who have watched and read the light novels, and for those who like Yuki Kaijura's works.
