The Doctor Is Out · review
In a jail cell, Lise Estelle asks a simple question, "Is it a crime to save people?". She was forced into a rebellion she wanted no part of. She was simply doing her duties as a doctor to uphold life and tend to the wounded. Strangely, an old lady approaches her asking for a medical examination. Lise believes this is her last duty as a doctor, but fate has other plans. She returns to the past as her 13 year old self. Determined to not go through the rebellion again, she uses her knowledge of the future to prevent it! As the synopsis states, hermain goal is to make the duke's heir healthy. However, the real story starts when she realizes there is much of a bigger conspiracy behind the rebellion than she initially believed. After earning the trust of the Duchess, she begins to investigate what's been happening behind the scenes.
While yes, this story may be a bit predictable with it being a classic power struggle between family members. The charm of this story lies in its execution. The way Lise calculates taking down the duchy's enemies is fascinating. Her sense of pride and her intellect is one that is admired by many. Being an orphaned commoner, she subconsciously grows to love the duchy as family, and the duchy grows to love her. The ML (the initially sick heir) is also quite a sight for sore eyes and is the classic trope of cold to others but warm and gentle to the one he loves, which causes a lot of comedic chaos.
The story is quite emotional and the reveals of how deep the rabbit hole truly goes had me at the edge of my seat. At the time of writing this, I cried not once, not twice, but five times while reading this manhwa. Everything and everyone is connected to each other in some sort of way and it just makes sense. Lise goes through grief, sorrow, and hardship but never forgets who she is, A doctor. Even when confronted with the idea of living a better life, she just wants to save others.
