Meitantei Conan: Keisatsu Gakkou-hen - Wild Police Story · review
As an avid reader of Detective Conan, this was a perfect companion piece slash spin off. Anyone who enjoys Amuro Tooru's character should definitely think of reading this series. It's short but sweet; an easy read for those wanting to get more into the fan-favorite friend quintet. Do keep in mind that unless you're quite familiar with the plot and side characters of Detective Conan you won't be able to enjoy the full experience. While the only character from the five that is highlighted further in the original series is Furuya Rei, this short series delves deeper into the bond between the five, giving them allinteresting back stories (especially in the case of Hiro) while keeping the atmosphere light and enjoyable with their shenanigans. It does have some crime elements to it as it is technically a 'police story', but it's much more reminiscent of a slice of life/coming of age manga.
WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR THE DETECTIVE CONAN SERIES BELOW!
The standout from Keisatsu Gakkou-hen is undoubtedly Matsuda Jinpei. He was portrayed as a cool, perfectionist type of guy in Conan - a man who was good at his job and definitely knew it. Keisatsu Gakkou-hen gave his character so much depth and personality and for what he lacks in screen time in the original, he more than makes up for it in exuberance and depth here.
