meth-e-meth · review
meth-e-meth is a manga that clearly had a lot of ideas it wanted to incorporate into its story, but even more obviously did not have the writing chops nor panel flow to properly execute. Its attempts at characterization for its high school cast fell short through a combination of overly-bloated dialogue and attempts at creating humor through subverting its own punchlines, and there was definitely at least one romance subplot that ended up completely abandoned, though on some level I at least appreciated that, after the MC got a lucky pervert moment, it showed him jerking off later. Centering a battle manga around golems butvaguely filtered through an I, Robot-shaped lens felt like a pretty fun concept at its outset, but as the story wore on, it became clear that there really wasn’t much of a plan for worldbuilding outside of the basic plot points you would expect a “protect the VIP”-style story to take.
This aspect gets turned up to 11 in the final chapters, in which I’m fairly certain the author was given his cancellation notice and had to wrap up the story prematurely, leading to a bunch of “end of the world” nonsense completely out of nowhere, as well as a single panel inexplicably drawn in the style of South Park. Speaking of which, the flow from panel to panel was, to put it mildly, rough. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I was completely thrown off by a scene transition, a character popping up mid conversation that I didn’t even know was there, or just the generally bad sense of movement. If I had anything at all good to say about the artwork, it would be that the main girl’s design is extremely cute. Everyone else varies from incredibly generic to incredibly awkward-looking. Quite frankly, this was a disaster. There’s really nothing here truly redeeming. Look somewhere else for a premise like this.
