Genkai Dokushin Joshi (26) Gohan · review
It isn't a funny manga, and it's not particularly charming or cute. It's about struggling to live with depression, and moves at a glacial pace. Some basic chores or the preparation of one meal can take an entire chapter, and there's no sense of accomplishment in doing what ordinary people do every day. All the main character has is a vague idea of "doing better" to cling to as she continues to live in misery. Because that's how it feels. The struggle for mental wellness can seem insurmountable, and the baby steps you take to get there feel infantilizing and painful. This manga really captures thisin a way that I respect, even if it makes for an unpalatable experience at first. It ends up feeling satisfying to see even a modest and abrupt ending brought by an untimely cancellation, just because of what it took to get there. It's something pretty special that I don't think other authors could handle this well.
