Gintama - Mr. Ginpachi's Zany Class · review
Gintama is my favorite anime, which made this adaptation particularly disappointing. While Ginpachi is occasionally entertaining and leans heavily into absurdity, it lacks the core elements that make Gintama compelling. The characters are difficult to connect with and contribute little of note, resulting in a series that falls short both emotionally and comedically. However, it was expected, as we all know the original source of Ginpachi wasn't written by Gintama's mangaka. One of Gintama’s greatest strengths is the dynamic between Kagura, Shinpachi, and Gintoki. Although there appears to be an attempt to echo that relationship here, it is executed too subtly and ultimately without impact. Moreover,Ginpachi himself lacks the charisma and depth that define Gintoki’s presence.
Noteworthy thing about this anime was Takasugi's character, whose portrayal (and pointed, self-aware criticism of the series) stood out as the most engaging aspect of it.
