Roll Over and Die: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! · review

What? What??? What am I even reading? This story is not your typical "kicked out of a hero's party, I got revenge" plot. It's actually more like "kicked out of the hero's party, but I still want to become a hero (by protecting Milkit, hence becoming her hero)." The art is great. Like really great. This artstyle makes scenes feel vibrant, makes characters feel lively, and, make gory scenes feel even more unsettling. Talking about gore, this manga isn't afraid to slap gore into our faces. It's really heavy, and full of blood all around (the protagonist's limbs are cut off like every 5 chapters, then healed back). Soif you don't like gore, avoid this.
The story's cover might tell you that this story focuses on 2 main characters: Flum and Milkit, but reading this manga, Flum is the one getting the most spotlight, and Milkit is more like a well-built side character. Nothing wrong with that, though, because, all the characters feel consistent and well-built, with clear personalities (except for the protagonist).
The plot follows Flum's journey in..... um....doing........what? The story never provided any clear detailed explanation on what Flum is really trying to do other than to protect Milkit, to become her hero, and live peacefully, which contradicts what she's doing. She's deliberately living in the much more dangerous West District of the capital, and, engaging with different scenarios she has no business in. If I wanted to live really peacefully, I'd run to the countryside and start a farm. Not doing whatever she's trying to do. Why did you stir up beef with the people at such a shady branch of the Adventurer's Guild? Traumatized people are supposed to be hyper-vigilant. The protagonist seems to be missing that. Another thing she's missing is revenge. Come on. Some guy lied to you, then sold you to hell and even slapped a slave mark on you, turning your life into a cycle of constant suffering. He didn't even try to stay anonymous. Did you just forget him, and your childhood friend who's also in the party, even after Eterna told you? Not only the protagonist, but every single character in here has goals that are either unclear, or confusing. For example, what does Eterna really want? Why is she just chilling here?
The plot also feels VERY contrived and flows VERY unnaturally. Sure! The Eternal Witch just happens to be living in the same house the protagonist was given to. Sure! Sara just completely randomly guessed that the man had troubles about herbs. Because of these moments, the pacing is really fast in a bad way, and, it feels like the author just wanted to give hints about the Church's shady experiments as quickly as possible.
The power system is... ok. Not too gamey, not too bad, and all of it feels decently well structured EXCEPT for the protagonist's ability. What does 'Reversal' exactly apply to? How does it exactly work, and on which subjects? It's genuinely one of the most confusing abilities out there, and confusing abilities need concrete explaining quick, or the world will feel very 'rigid-less', and it'll feel like the story keeps making exceptions for the protagonist to win.
Despite all the cons, though, this manga is entertaining as hell. There isn't a clear "good" or "bad" side in this story. In fact, the story makes it so that the church seems to be the main villains. I love the protagonist's extreme grit, her fearlessness and her high tolerance to pain. It's great seeing all the battles unravel, and the mysteries gradually being solved. This (in my opinion) has a decent-to-high entertainment value. Read it if you want extremely graphic battles, and just want to pass time. (there's also a bit of yuri, do whatever you want with that information).
