Review of A Whisker Away
Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu (A Whisker Away) is overall a good anime to watch, especially if you are a fan of fantasy and/or cats. The story was unique and had an interesting plot, accompanied by great art and sound. The execution of the story however was hindered by mediocre character development and a dull climax. The story, by no means, was cliché; there are few, if any, anime that share this interesting mix of romance and fantasy revolved around cats. The main character, Miyo (Muge) pursues her romantic interest persistantly as both a cat and human. The ability to change back and forth topursue this goal is definetly a different take to romance that is worth a watch.
In regards to art and sound, both are great. The art style does an excellent job executing the fantasy and reality mix, accompanied by stunning sound effects that draw viewers to the anime's different environmental settings.
When it comes to character development, the anime sinks. Aside from Miyo, and parts of Kento (main character's love interest), there is no stability among the clunky cast. Not all characters in an anime are expected to have stories, but the side characters in this anime should have. Several examples include, but not limited to, family members of both Miyo and Kento and Miyo's bestfriend. The individual situations and personalites of both Miyo and Kento are influenced by these characters, yet there is little backstory that portrays how, and leaves viewers to guess or assume; only vague comments were made about each leaving confusing character lores.
Watching the anime was fairly entertaining. The climax of an anime should be more mesmerizing and not briefly reached. Miyo switches between cat and human constantly and the climax was predictable, which is fine, but it was forced and quick. An event that should have had more emotion and tension was dull. I was extremely disappointed when Miyo's secret finally surfaced in the story and there was little to no reaction; it was casual as the story's falling action leaves viewers scratching their head.
Overall, the anime is not a must watch, but the interesting plot gives it the edge it needs to be good enough for an once-over.
