Planetes · review
This manga reminds its reader how important human connection is, and why, even when we are pushed to our limits, it is still important to stay connected to what matters most - those close to us. Throughout this series various characters are tested and pushed to their limits, and given the choice between pursuing their dreams at whatever cost possible, or instead choosing to care about their loved ones. The story, while appearing similar to the average Sci-Fi plot at first, soon emerges as somewhat unique, showing the "behind the scenes" of futuristic space life. While there is a climax to the story, the level ofaction that one might expect from the circumstances the said characters are placed in is much lower than one might expect. If anything, this leads to a more fulfilling ending, allowing Yukimura to focus more time and energy developing his characters. Makoto Yukimura (famous for his work that would follow this, Vinland Saga) creates characters that feel mostly real and authentic.
One of the downsides to this manga are the opening chapters. Although not horrible, the reader can tell that Yukimura is still experimenting heavily with what and how he wants to tell with his story. This is shown especially with the sudden change of Hachimaki's hair color between chapters with no apparent explanation.
