Review of The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of the Commandments
(warning: contains spoilers) I was really liking this season up to about three-quarters of the way in. Great story, lots of interesting background info/development given to existing characters like Diane, Ban, and of course Meliodas. And... then it kind of died for me. As usual, a new threat emerges that makes the old one look like small fries. It's said that if Hendrickson is a whirlwind, then the Ten Commandments are a "natural disaster." Each one of them is nearly ten times as strong as the average Seven Deadly Sin, with a weaker member making quick work of Meliodas during one of the earlier episodes. Yet later, when the final Sin Escanor is introduced, he's so OP that he's able to demolish two of them with little effort... uh, what? Meanwhile, virtually all of the Sins besides him and Meliodas are sidelined during the later fights with the Commandments. You don't even see King and Diane's faces at all for the last couple of episodes.
Perhaps this is because I watched too much in one go, but in general, I feel like they tried to squeeze in way too much during the later parts of the show. Stuff like Zaratras being revived for a couple of episodes, Merlin being the daughter of some ancient entity, etc. seemed too ambitious. A lot of the Commandments' downfalls felt anticlimactic given how powerful they were made out to be initially-- Melascula and Grayroad basically getting one-shotted, for example, and Estarossa/Zeldris being pushed out of the story with a single blow from Escanor. Finally, the fact that Meliodas never dies just seems like waaaay too convenient a plot device.
Overall, it was good, big fan of the first season and this continued it pretty decently. Wonderful animation, fight scenes, and storytelling, just was a biit of a letdown for the last few episodes.
