Review of Barefoot Gen

*Spoiler warning!* This movie was pure depression with a small bit of comedy. To start, the plot was really good! It went at a realistic pace, kind of building up relationship between characters, as well as getting us attached to certain characters! I feel like the timing of the bombing was perfect, but I feel like the amount of death we saw was a little much. Don't get me wrong, there was a painfully high number of people that died during the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but I feel like the amount of characters that were kinda "main" characters that died very early on wasa little much. For example, Eiko's death and Daikichi's death wasn't that sad, because I feel like we didn't see much of them, therefore, I wasn't that sad when they died. Shinji's death on the other hand left me with a stomach ache because I got attached to him, I thought he was gonna survive, so when he died it hurt! Same with Tomoko's death, I felt like she was gonna survive, and they were gonna get her the milk, but they didn't! Leaving me with a worse stomach ache, so basically the death's were either at the best time, or the worst time. Art was good-ish? Compared to other war movies I've seen that came out around the same time (Grave of the Fireflies) the art style, and graphics were not that great. But, it fit the feeling of the movie enough, to where I didn't hate it. Personalities were great! Gen was very heroic, kind, and funny! Even in the worst of times he still made jokes to make him, his mother, and Ryuuta feel better! He cared about his family very deeply, but he doesn't let guilt get the best of him! Overall, this movie was spectacular. The reason I didn't give it a 10 or 9 though was because first, the art compared to other movies wasn't anything impressive, and I feel like it could've been a little better. Certain deaths that were probably supposed to be impactful, weren't. And I feel like the length of the movie was a little short! I'm probably gonna watch the second one soon, and I'll review that too! Anyways, this movie was a 8/10 in my book! :3
