Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
I have watched this show twice so far. What I really love about this show is the character development, especially towards the end. The darker turn the show takes and the unique ending, which basically throws the overall plot away for an intense analysis of the main characters, really makes this a one-of-a-kind anime for me, and a must-watch! I have spend countless hours debating with friends the philosophy behind this anime. However, there are some downsides. The anime isnt a manga or novel adaption, and the story was basically written episode for episode. And it shows. There are some plot holes, especially in the beginning, and if youre not deep in NGE-lore, and trust me, theres A LOT of it, you will surely end up confused at some point.
For people who love to try to work out the overall meaning, who love to watch closely and try to get every piece of information as to figure out the animes big turning points way before they get relevant, this is a must-watch. As for someone who would rather just lay back and get entertained, Id recommend the rebuild movies. They are fun action mecha movies, but they lack the deep philosophical aspect of the show, while retaining some of its symbolism.
