Review of Kokoro Connect

Kokoro Connect score might not be lowest but it definitely one of anime that disappoint me the most. Without help from Inaba characteristic, score would go down way lower than this. I will separate review into 2 parts. During body swapping arc which last for 5 episodes and after body swapping arc. Idea of body swapping arc is very interesting. Think about it. What going to happen when girl and boy are swapping body. How they gonna live with it? How they gonna trust each other? Sure, it’s very interesting idea. It’s all depend on how they are going to use this idea. And for this arc,I think it’s good and I’m fine with drama and story of it. Honestly, it’s little bit lower than my expectation but it’s probably just me set expectation too high. Some drama inside are overdramatic but most drama is well-polished and in climax moment it actually made me feel emotionally invested in. Overall, not much complain. It’s decent. However, I think some part of it took drama too far. Some of it are also unnecessary. And I also hope that next arc thing might be better. I know that Kokoro Connect story is gonna be ridden by drama and drama anime like this will be overdramatic most of the time but there’s limit to that and I think it can’t go further. Oh boy…

Second phenomenon came in immediately in Episode 6 after first arc end (Episode 5). Since I’m avoiding spoiling it, I won’t name it nor tell what’s inside but overall it starting to turn into mess of drama. They go beyond limit and they’re not doing it well. They put too much drama inside one single arc and thing start feeling off. Idea of this arc is also far away from being interesting. It feel like they didn’t realized how interesting body switching idea was and how uninteresting the idea of second arc is comparing to it. They could’ve just bring new topic or new drama into body swapping arc instead and it would’ve been better. Instead they turned it to soap opera.

Not enough? There’s another arc which also bring some nonsense drama into around last 3 episodes. At this point, drama isn’t even related to the arc anymore and idea of it is even less interesting than second arc. I repeat again, Kokoro Connect would’ve been better if they just stick with their old idea instead of keep bringing lower quality and boring idea in. I just can’t understand why they’re doing this. Not only did they bringing lower quality idea in but they also bringing nonsense drama into it and try their best to put it inside arc as much as they can. Just… why?

I have nothing else to complain, all VA doing good job. Animation look fine. Song could’ve been better but it’s not that important. Character are generic if you don’t count Inaba but generic is fine, it’s common nowadays to use this kind of character anyway and I don’t mind.

Overall, first part of Kokoro Connect (Episode 1-5) is nice but start falling down quickly in later arc as they took drama into extreme and new idea is worse than body switching idea. Would’ve been way better than this if they just stick with body switching. I find it interesting in Episode 1-5 but I start to feel boring more and more since Episode 6. Honestly, at later point I just watch for Inaba and not for story at all. I can see why people will enjoy this but I’ve seen enough soap opera already. It’s decent soap opera compared to typical soap opera though.
