Review of Black Lagoon
For my second review, I chose Black Lagoon as it's one of my favorite animes. So let us start with the review, shall we? The anime doesn't consist of any major storyline, but rather of small episode arcs. So Black Lagoon is somewhat similar to an episodic anime series. Despite it, you barely, or should I rather say never, get bored throughout the entire series. To me, Black Lagoon basically felt like an intense summer hollywood action blockbuster movie. And just to point out how crazy and awesome Black Lagoon actually is, I have one thing to say: Nuns with guns!! One thing I'd like to criticize though,is the abrupt ending of the first season. So it's highly recommended that you watch the second season, as it basically leaves off where this season ends.
Let's head on to the sound. I personally like the opening and ending. While the opening is a punk rock song, which makes me wanna flip over tables and punch someone in the face, the ending seems in some episodes out of place for it's more slower and sadder music, which already starts within the end of the episode. The in-episode music is great and fits most of the scenes well. And for those who are choosing between sub and dub: I highly recommend choosing the dub as it suits the characters overall much better.
The art in Black Lagoon is quite beautiful. If you pay attention to it, you'll notice how detailed, colorful and well drawn the characters and the background are. The animation is very smooth and enjoyable as well.
At first, once you start watching the show, the build-up of the Black Lagoon seems quite cliché. You got your stereotypical black dude, the computer geek, the crazy chick with guns and the calm reasonable guy. But you'll find out that every character in this anime is quite unique with its own personality and background story. Unlike other action packed animes, there's quite a bit of character development. As the story progresses, you'll notice that most of the character development is being put into the protagonist Rock and Revy, who are in my opinion undoubtedly the most interesting characters of all, besides Balalaika.
So, is it worth watching? Definitely! It's got superb animation, great character development and kick-ass action scenes and characters. What more is there to want? I would recommend to stay away though if you are a young viewer or dislike violence, foul language and gory scenes.
