Review of Black Lagoon
I just could not stand this anime. I first, and last saw this anime a good maybe four or five years ago. I just recently remembered it now... I would not consider that a good thing. I remember more about NARUTO than this and I saw Naruto last about... 8-9 years ago? Sit back people, this is an angry rant about to happen... I don't remember ANY of the characters' names except for Rock's, and that's only because of "The Rock". I almost remembered Revy's, but I called her Remi first... Rock starts as this boring, do good civilian type guy and "transforms" into a "badass"...Or at least I think that was the intention? If anything he just seemed to somehow get blander. Revy just seems try-hard as a character. Her entire character is "I'm a money and bloodthirsty psychopath" or something like that. Seriously. What is the gamut of Revy's emotions? There's: angry, emotionless, uhh... Sarcastic (I know it's a stretch)? Yeah, that's all I got. It's boring. She's boring. I get it, she's supposed to have only two emotions, but it doesn't forgive how boring she is. All Revy does is yell profane and explicit things, and blow shit up. I don't even remember what the other characters even look like. I'M AN ARTIST, I USUALLY REMEMBER THAT CRAP.
I can't even remember the premise of the story anymore. I can remember more about the premise of Final Fantasy: Advent Children more, and I could barely understand what the premise of that movie even was outside of some dumbshits kidnapping children to bring back Sephiroth or something dumb like that. What about Black Lagoon? Something about a disc in Rock's briefcase? Sure, I could go look up the premise, but my point is that I could remember the story of movie I watched when I was a freshman in high school that I could barely understand (because that one's story was poorly told as well), but can't even remember what this show's one was. Hell, I remember the premise of the Pokemon movies I watched back in elementary school sooner than Black Lagoon's!
I think the show's only real saving grace was the art. The animation was fluid, and the colors matched the show's tone.
The ending theme was lame. This is a nitpick, but if there was one thing I actually did remember well about the show, it's that every time the ending theme started to play, it always felt out of place. That's the main reason I rated sound so low. It's just so jarring to hear this calming song come out of nowhere. The song seems like it's going to pick up and when you think it will, it just ends... This show is utter chaos with it's action scenes, but then you hear this soft song start playing... Ugh, it just ruins the mood of the last scene sometimes, or just plain misleads you until you remember that it's just the boring ending. Especially since they play the song a little early BEFORE the credits. At least the voice acting wasn't too bad, though not memorable.
All in all, I only remember two big things about this show: gratuitous violence and tits. I'm not against violence in an anime, in fact I quite enjoy it, and I don't care about tits either way, but it feels like there's no real purpose for either of those things except to draw in that kind of audience.
If you like this show, good, but this is my opinion on a show that I feel just really isn't that memorable from my perspective. "Memorability" is something I like, and this show just didn't seem to have it. Who knows? Maybe I'm just not the target audience for this show. Then again, I also enjoyed the game "No More Heroes" and that has the same kind of vulgarity and violence... I'll leave it up to you...
