Review of Black Butler
This anime got me in A MOOD. I know what all the people say: this anime has more filler than plot, the side characters are annoying, but at least art is spectacularly immersive! I have to agree with all of those comments, but they are definitely not the only comments I have to offer. Black Butler was such an entertaining anime and I truly enjoyed watching the series. First off, I would like to mention that the first episode successfully put me in a ~spooky~ mood. It has an impressive use of shadows and dark colors to immerse me in London, and I was completelyhooked with the show. I'm not very good at horror/ mystery because I get too spooked, but this was a great intro to the genre! I think there is minimal gore. There are small pieces of plot mixed in with the filler episodes, so I just tried to focus on Ciel and Sebastian instead of all of the people they met.
The characters were what made me stay and watch the anime. I was truly entertained by Ciel's headstrong and blunt personality with the blend of Sebastian constantly there to do Ciel's bidding. Each episode felt new and (although fillter mostly) the small nuggets of plot on Ciel's backstory made the anime worthwhile and interesting. I also found myself intrigued with some of the more "filler" episodes and enjoyed the mini plot vibe it had because then we got to explore more parts of Ciel's character and decision-making. For example, the episode where they were at a ball to find the doctor in the Jack the Ripper episode had a beautiful blend of Victorian-era clothes and plot.
The storytelling in the anime captivated me. I like how witty Sebastian is, and he truly fits in his role as butler with the snack of the day and the tea he serves. Another component that I found attractive was the setting and genre. London in the late 1800s fits the whole nobility theme and mystery in this!
Tl; dr: this anime is worth watching to try the genre of life with a demon.
