Review of Devilman: Crybaby
[spoilers] So, how can we start. DevilManCryBaby (DMCB for short) is probally one of my favourites animes right now. And even tho it has some (maybe critical) flaws, I think it pays of by the qualitty and the suttle details. First: Story. the first part of the anime for me is the catch, it settles the World so well and makes you want to see more of how devils work and all the horrible things that devilman's do and humanity itself does. Still, the story overall feels rushed. The first part would`ve been much more awsome if we had the right carachter developtmet and a slowpaste built apon the main topics, such as the rage within society and the deplorable things we do as humans. The symbolism actually solo carries for me in this crithereor. You can spend hours just searching up the little things such as the noises and drawing details made for this, but I`ll talk more about them later.
The second part of the story is more controversial. At first, I really didn`t like the devil`s insurgency and the way they propose the clash between Akira and Ryo. But upon a second look, I really think everything is well written. the essencials aren`t missing and Ryo doesn`t seem out of place. He is satan, the embodiment of evil and dark plesure, the literal guy who thinks it`s ok to give his buddy a devil and destroy the world for his own desires. And he beeing so natural during a sabbath and on a apocalypsicle scenary is the perfect opposit of akira`s faith in humanity. But as I told before, I would enjoy much more if it had more time.
-Art:
What can I say, Masaaki Yuasa is just incredible. The colors are dark but also vibrant when it`s needed. The action is fluid and the cartoonish style and simplistic backgroud choices on some sceanes makes we focus more and enjoy what`s beeing said. And the graffics sceanes are so beautfull, even when we are seeing people beeing multilated or devil fights, it all seems so energetic and surrealistic. It`s a unic style that makes up for Masaaki Yuasa`s reputation.
-Sound:
When searching for interviews about his work, I found a very interesting article from a brazilian blog, in wich Masaaki Yuasa said he wanted to adapt DMCB to a more contemporany style. And I think a lot is done by the sound. The OST of DMCB is just incredible, I loved the eletronic choice, it`s perfect match for the fluid psycodelic artstyle. Not only that, but the screams are a lot clear, but I must admit, they sound a little generic/clichĂȘ. Overall, I really love the OST and the voice actors performance.
-Character:
This is a lowpoint for me. Except from some of the maincast (Akira Ryo/Satan and Mi-Ko), the rest of the cast lacks some construction or are just not that well written. I like how simplistic Akira is, a lonly kid who instinctive loves his parents and has a giagantic empaty for Mankind. But his chieldhood friend Miki, is not that great for me. She's supossed to be one of the caracthers affected by Akira's faith, more of a positive one. But for me, she appears more like a annoying little brat that could perfectly fit alongside Naruto. Her entire speech on Instagram while Akira is thrown stones is just boring and generic, and legit sound like shounnen talking from a mercyfull hero. Her familly, on the other hand, it's much more developt. The model cristian familly, that valorizes love and charity and the well beeing of its members and others, that in the end, is corrupted by the violent thendencies of the World. And Miki's father for me it's the sum of it all, he lost his wife because she was devoured by his son, and not only that, he choosed not to kill them only to be shoot bry cops. Only to end short, the other part of the cast it's just ok, if they have had more time on screen maybe they would've come better.
-Enjoyment:
Not much to speak here. I really just like it, and I think it's a good show. You can watch it either more serious or just enjoy it open headed. If you don't like it, ok. What am I going to do? force you to like it? I may desagree, but it's your taste so you know better. I just want to say, don't hate! If you don't like more distopic/psycodelic stuff, it's ok, but don't just go out there saying bad stuff about the anime, other people may like it.
-Overall: I really like it. It's a good story for its time (1970's), and it's kind of actual if you think. It's a little rushed and the ending fells a little akward or random, but after the initial shock it comes out nice. I would recommend.
