Review of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a journey about an elf mage who lived through a grand, world-saving adventure… and then realized the epilogue is going to take centuries. It’s framed as a quiet meditation on time, memory, and the fact that immortal people are basically professional procrastinators. The art is gorgeous in a way that makes you want to pause and just stare, but the story takes “slow pacing” as both a philosophy and a dare. Battles exist, but they’re more like polite disagreements with magic than adrenaline-fueled clashes. The emotional beats hit hardest when you realize how much Frieren has missed simply because shewasn’t paying attention to how fleeting human lives are. Still, the show sometimes leans so far into melancholy minimalism that you wonder if it’s afraid to raise its voice. Side characters bring warmth and momentum, but Frieren herself moves through events with the emotional speed of a glacier. Beautiful, but very, very slow. For some, this feels like a masterclass in subtle storytelling but for others, it might feel like watching a screensaver with occasional feelings. Either way, it’s a kind of fantasy that’s less about the destination and more about what you remember on the long, quiet walk.
