Review of Fena: Pirate Princess
Warning for characters treating women like a sexual commodity sometimes, main heroine specifically by side/background characters specifically. She comes from a brothel, a background character offers a needed service if she sleeps with him(this gets resolved otherwise and she gets an apology off screen) and she gets called a prostitute. Just a note for some who dont want to be slapped in the face with stuff like that and prefer a warning, Nothing graphic, just these little things that made me go a lil ":/". Stellar characters, stellar setting, stellar art, but somewhere midpoint the story takes on too many turns just to take those turnsand become "unexpected" or whatever. It didnt need those weird turns, it wouldve been better if it was a classical adventure story. I think they were trying to be "original" whatever that meant and really lost the story somewhere there. Still bawled my eyes out!
The romance is between a tsundere dude and a genki girl and manages to be surprisingly cute, they're a very classical pair. The romance is nicely balanced with the plot and other hijinks so it doesnt get annoying and blooms gradually.
The side characters are GREAT, theyre insanely funny and bright and full of personality.
The world is gorgeous and really makes me miss the sea...
All that said, the main heroine is very much a damsel in distress and her love interest is a "cold brooding and sometimes (rarely, thankfully) even kinda mean" dude. Personally, that sometimes threw me off, even if the dude became much nicer and cuter as time went on.
