Review of Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro
From my quick look at the reviews from this show, I find that there are two categories of people: people who found the "toying" to be appalling, and those who enjoyed the show and gave it a 7-9/10. I personally find myself to be in the second category, but I don't think that the people in the first category are completely wrong. If you personally find the teasing shown in the show to be egregious content, then yeah, don't watch it, you aren't going to enjoy it. I originally wasn't going to watch Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san. As somebody who isn't really into the whole "please step onme" sort of thing, I thought I would find it uncomfortable and unfunny. While I did find the first episode or two a bit uncomfortable, I found the rest of the show pretty heartwarming. In my eyes, the "toying" doesn't really get anywhere farther than teasing for the majority of the show, which allowed me to enjoy the more heartwarming or funny aspects of the show without going, "uhh... that's kind of not cool." every 5 seconds.
As far as the actual story of Nagatoro is concerned, its nothing too special or complicated. It's a SOL comedy, the overall plot mainly is just watching Naoto and Nagatoro's relationship develop. It executes this pretty well, and I found it enjoyable to follow their little relationship.
The characters of Nagatoro aren't really anything super unique, but they are still pretty well done, and I liked quite a few of them by the end of the show. Nagatoro is probably my favorite, 50% of that just being because of the wonderful facial expressions she makes.
Art & Sound for Nagotoro is pretty great. The OP and ED were awesome, visually and audio-wise. The OP was probably my one of my favorite OPs of this season for visuals, either this or Odd Taxi. The show as a whole is also pretty good artistically. The main reason being because of how expressive the characters are. The show just also looks good as a whole.
So to wrap things up, while many of its individual parts, excluding art & sound, aren't anything too original or fantastic, everything comes together quite well to make a pretty good show.
