Utakata · review
Uta∽Kata isn’t for everyone. Fans of both slice-of-life and introspective themes will find something rare here. But those expecting a flashy, neatly wrapped, bombastic narrative with no ambiguity and zero fanservice might want to look elsewhere. The backgrounds are richly detailed, long shots are used purposefully, and many visual elements reward rewatching. savage genius' opening and ending themes are well-matched to the tone and may inspire listeners to explore the duo’s entire discography. The plot is sketched, held together by subtle threads. It’s not a Swiss clock of twists and structure, but more like a quiet collection of poems about adolescence and human flaws. The anime isn’t widely known, andits official website was shut down in 2023 — yet it came years before more famous titles, walking an unusual path for the first time, and paying the price for it.
Interestingly, some key staff members — including animation director Kazuya Shiotsuki — would go on to work on Puella Magi Madoka Magica years later.
Recommended for those tired of 2020s clichés and looking for something slower, more intimate, and for the few.
