Evangelion is not anime for anyone. And I'm not saying this because only some people can understand it. It is because it deals with very strong topics such as depression, adultery, abandonment, low self-esteem, among others. And this is progressively dealt with throughout the story. It is difficult to see, difficult to understand perhaps. The series begins by selling you something that is not (a typical mecha show) and then ends up being a kind of analysis of the mind of the protagonist. Seeing it was not what I expected, but it ended up catching me. The art and the representation of the director's ideasthrough sound and image seem to me excellently executed.
However the story is a bit flat, although clearly not Anno's focus.
