Review of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
I found out about this anime through some of my twitter fans and they particularly were saying that they were crying/full of tears after watching this anime. I guess this was part of the motivation for me to see if i would cry lol. Story: 9/10 The storyline is relatively simple but really is one you want to follow and want to see the progression of the characters's development and how they all reunite again as the super peace busters xD. The story itself isn't a totally unique idea as it focuses on how the group split up after Memma's death and how her spirithelps reunite them again, but the character development makes up for that easily. There were a few loopholes/questionable aspects in the story like why Jinta didn't think earlier to show that Memma's spirit/ghost does exist to others aka like her making the muffins/writing stuff down/etc. Idk why it took so many episodes for him/rest of group to think that before Memma ultimately hints that.
Also, you never find out how exactly Memma died, but it's somewhat implied and I kinda liked how they approached that instead of just showing the incident.
Art: 8/10 Very cleanly drawn, but nothing that wows you. it does a little charm to it though and fits the anime.
Sound: 8/10 The voice-acting was pretty good, except for Jinta's father kept saying the word "cute"- that honestly got annoying and they coulda toned that down a bit. The intro song is ok, but I feel the credit/ending song is much more emotional and fitting. Again, nothing to wow ya.
Character: 9/10 This is where the anime shines as you see character development and progression as more of the story is told you find out more about the characters and their guilt/sadness. The characters each have their own coping mechanism, like Memma's father wants to try his best to forget Memma and goes out of his way to pack up all her stuff/put in the closet and move on, while her mother is totally stuck in the past and cannot stop grieving, even to the point where she doesn't see change in her son. Popo even has guilt and tries to hide it by always trying to act happy/goofish, but he suffers just as much. Jintan for the most part doesn't want Memma's spirit to leave and has acts/thoughts of selfishness and also becomes secluded/stays at home for most of the day and skips school(withdrawn). Lol you even get crossdressing as Matsuyuki dresses up as Memma to help cope with his lost love/guilt.
Enjoyment/Overall: I give this anime a 9/10 as it really has a well put story and great character development! You could even write a paper on the coping mechanisms present and its acceptance in society and our right to judge those coping mechanisms.
P.S. I did not cry, but my chest did tighten up(that happens when i'm sad)
