Black Lagoon

Review of Black Lagoon

8/10

I'm writing this review for the entire black lagoon series as a whole and not just the first season. Overall this anime is quite an easy watch with not much depth to it. Throughout most of it the episodes are sus ally in arcs of three and the story doesn't really progress as such, as long as you've watched the first two episodes you could really watch any arc within the first two seasons in any order you would like. Viewers may like a gripping continuous story and I really don't think this series is for them. Although there can be time times in episodes whereit becomes a bit more serious and complex, usually when it deals with a characters backstory.
The strongest point of this anime in my opinion is its characters as they are all unique and doesn't feel like a plain boring one dimensional person, they all have their own quirks and stories which all set them aside from the others making them engaging. I really enjoy that the series never leaves characters in only one particular episode and will always bring them back later. I think the anime was originally focused on the whole 4 crew members of the black lagoon but they bough t it back to two main characters being Roc and Revy , which is disanointing as I would've liked to see more from Dutch and Benny.
The dub in this anime is one of the best I have ever seen, this might be a little a little controversial but I preferred it in English dub than in original Japanese as it gives the characters more of a personality and I never found the lip syncing that unnerving and incorrect, that and most of the characters are supposed to speak English, there is really only ever one Japanese character for most of the anime being Roc. One thing I didn't like about the anime is that characters that spoke a non English language would speak English until they met English characters in which they would speak another language, it was confusing.
A major factor in this anime which I did not like is that they constantly shifted between fun and light arcs with simple plots to more dark and complex plots. That being:
The last arc of season 1 and last and first arc of season 2 along with all of season 3.
They had their good moments but some were a bit too confusing and sinister (except the second half of season 2 which I found were the best episodes) , especially in season 3 where there's multiple plot lines instead of only focusing on one which took the enjoyment out of it a little.
Something to note is that Season 3 doesn't end climactically but like any other season, so I'm fairly sure they were planning on making seasons but it never happened or it was cancelled.
Altogether, this anime starts off as a fun show with lots of great action to turn your brain off at the end of the day. However it shifted in to a more serious anime especially in season 3 which is just one big 5 episode arc. It isn't that significant and memorable in my opinion but its usually good at being an incredibly entertaining series.
I rate both th first 2 seasons an 8.
But a 6 for the third season.
So for the whole series I'll give it a 7/10
