Review of Gintama
As you may all know me, I usually give a 10-10 overall when rating an anime/manga. I'm not a critic but this is what I think of Gintama. At first I didn't pay any attention to it when I've read it's about historical stuff and samurai and Edo period, until I suddenly saw an episode or two, an arc or two and just suddenly it got me hooked up. The thing is, not all episodes are great or funny like the others, so it just so happens that I watched those episodes which caused me to ignore it. It's true that Gintoki Sakata is a great character, not because he's the main protagonist, but his role isn't boring or 'uncool' or too overrated of the sort. He's just perfect as he is. No offense to Shinpachi, but sometimes I don't like it when he's around, but it can't be helped, he keeps an episode or arc balanced. He can play out a serious and a naughty character, either way, he's good as he is. Kagura is one of the cutest protagonists I've seen in this anime. Just look at her eat and 'go bananas' in the anime is already adorable. These three characters keeps the anime up. But if you add more characters that are as interesting, intriguing and adorable as them? Mix in the Shinsengumi, Yoshiwara women and the others, it's already enough to get attention.
It plays out like this to me. Characters 'advertise' the anime. The story is the product than we can try once we've been enticed by the character. And once we watched it, it means we 'used' the 'product' and we liked it which is why I keep coming back to 'buy' (watch) it. Or it could be the other way around. The story is the one that 'advertises' the anime and the characters are the 'freebies' or something. Either way, there is always one part of the anime that advertises itself. It could be the cool action fights/battles or the humor and fanservice.
For Gintama it's both the humor and action. Although it's more on humor and parodies. It's funny in it's own way.
