Having watched Mai-Hime, Mai-Otome & Mai- Otome-S.ifr. Just to update the anime information. Mai- Otome is a sequel to Mai-Hime set in the future. Watching the Otome series will give the references needed to see this. so this is not a alternaive universe setting.
