Review of Ghost Hunt
Well... that was interesting to say the least. After watching 'Another', a series recommended to me by a horror-loving friend of mine, I got obsessed with the horror genre and searched for anime that would fit my... 'unique' tastes. I found a list that recommended Ghost Hunt to lovers of 'Another', so I had to try it. I watched the first few episodes in a clump, and I have to admit like many other people that I found them not to be very interesting. Other than the characters, the storyline was a bit dull and didn't hold my attention very well. I stopped watching itafter that, but I have a bit of OCD concerning unfinished things, so I resolved, to come back and finish it, whether it was enjoyable or not.
I was pleasantly surprised. The characters were great as always, being very relatable and fun without being too perfect or cliche, along with the fact that I simply couldn't choose a favorite. I have an unhealthy habit of hating the female lead in most cases, but somehow, Mai managed to remain very realistic and not as annoying as most female characters I see. It's pretty difficult to write a good female character while still maintaining the romance, after all. Most writers tend to paint their females as damsels in distress or suckers for their crushes, but Mai was able to remain feminine and fiery in a way that satisfied me and I really liked her as a character.
The cases and storylines were also interesting, though some were quite easy to figure out from the beginning because of the obviousness of the foreshadowing. However, I really enjoyed some of the curveballs thrown and the level of mystery that was maintained about Mai's and Naru's powers.
However interesting, I do feel as though the anime was very unfinished. There were some plotholes that were just smoothed over in some of the arcs with no further explanation, along with some confusing points that were never clarified. On top of that, Mai's and Naru's powers were never fully explained, and the ending of the anime was a little bit cut off, like an unfinished thought.
However, I suppose that this only motivates me further to read the manga and the light novels, so I suppose it wasn't the worst ending ever (*cough cough* looking at you, Ouran!).
All in all, if you like anime with a little bit of mystery and a tiny bit of gore, along with dark histories and a pinch of shojo romance, then this is probably your cup of tea. The first case is a bit dull, but if you make it through, you might just enjoy the rest. :)
