This "review" contains huge spoilers for the anime. First off i need to say that i am biased against these anime because of a few reasons: -I hate mecha and Science Fiction anime/media. -I already watched this anime a few years ago and i remember hating it a lot, i am only rewatching it just to make up my mind about it and to actually give it justice by watching the movie as well, since the last time i didn't do that. -I know this is an anime loved by many people for being one of the first anime of its kind i guess, but i don't care aboutthat, just because is one of the first that doesn't mean we should put it on a pedestal and praise it.
In my opinion the first things aka the very old movies/anime/inventions are usually flawed by design (since they were the first), they are full of mistakes,
by that i mean they have lots of issues that the newer media got right over the evolution of our technology, imagination and the way we tell stories.
And of course lots of the new stuff/anime got inspired by it, that is true, the problem is, everything is inspired by everything and it shouldn't be taken as a negative trait for any kind of media.

These will be a few of my thoughts while watching the anime:
If i skip an episode is because i have nothing good nor bad to say about it.

_Episode 1 and 2:

Out off the bat they put Shinji to pilot this huge robot, without him ever piloting or even being near any of this kind of technology before, they made him fight this huge alien/monster like creature, without him even knowing how to control the robot, he has no information, and nobody told him how to do it in the first place, it was as if he was supposed to know that already somehow? very strange...

So let me guess this straight, all these very "smart" scientists from this very high technological era, put a huge amount of money and effort and time to create these powerful super robots and then they just let this new kid try to "pilot" it with no info nor practice, i am legit in awe by the stupidity of these people... like what did they expect to happen really? did they expect Shinji to just beat this alien without knowing even how to walk or even move a any limb for that matter...

Hmm interesting, it seems like this Eva robot has a mind of its own after all, hence since ep 1 when it protected the kid from getting hit by those falling things.

_Episode 3:

Well he at least now knows how to control the damn robot, but i have a really big question, since Shinji is so vital to this entire operation, and he literally keeps the entire city safe, why does nobody raises his morale and teaches him more about this aliens and about his important role in fighting them to protect the city? like you would think that would be top priority right? no they instead send him to this useless school to get more depressed and beaten up somehow.. don't get me wrong, i think sending him to a school since he is still a kid will help him mentally since he will be around kids around his age but that clearly is not enough,Shinji seems to suffer from some bad depression and other negative phychological effects from his unknown past and from the current situation with him having to pilot and fight these weird alien monsters.

_Episode 4:

I liked this episode,You know what they say, you don't know you liked something until you lost it and the same can be applied to Shinji in this episode, in the final moments of the episode he makes up his mind and finds out that he was already at home, he was already in a warming place because of the people that actually helped him, mind you the only people that did that, his 2 school friends, if it weren't for them i don't know what would have happened with Shinji.

One thing that came into my mind while watching this episode was yet another mystery and that is: if only 14 year old kids can pilot these huge robots for what ever reason, why not make some ads and ask for the help of kids around the city? why does it have to be only those specific kids? feels really odd, no explanation whatsoever.

_Episode 5:

This one was ok,we did get introduced to a new character and that is the other kid that pilots and tests these robots, Rey, who would have known that there can be someone with less social skills than Shinji, this episode had a few funny moments here and there like how Rei completly ignored Shinji in the room scene, and of course the obligatory "ups i just slipped and now i am on top of you" (while you are even naked) type of scenario, i know this might as well be the first time an anime has this kind of scene, but that doesn't make it any less awkward and stupid.

_Episode 8:

Good episode, i am not really a fan of all those angel fights that are won so hard and with so much effort and casualties, those eva robots and those "special" kids are supposed to be like op angel exterminators and yet they barely are able to kill them somehow, and of course there is always only 1 angel attacking them, imagine if there were 2, rip everyone.

_Episode 9:

For the first time we actually see some improvement with the training of these kids, (aka strategical training and physical training for defeating their enemy) after all this time not doing any of that and just wasting time, once again it seems weird to me how everyone is still alive since is so difficult to even kill 1 angel at a time, but at least Shinji isn't that depressed anymore since he got another real partner that can actually fight and be able to talk about and train with against those alien/angels.

One thing that came into my mind while watching this episode was: why are their rifle type weapons so useless? this is a very generic trope for old anime, where everyone that has a gun and shots 1000 times at its target without doing any harm, its quite annoying, since is clearly obvious they do 0 dmg with them, they should only focus with the melee weapons and that gigantic sniper rifle they used to kill the cube alien.

_Episode 11:

I cannot believe it.. the rifle type weapons actually killed an angel, what is this madness...When the plot requires the rifle to deal damage they do, interesting.

_Episode 17 was actually the best one so far, it was the only episode that made me laugh out loud with Shinji's line "You know i'm a boy right?" :D

_Episode 18 was terrible, from the beginning of the episode everyone that knew about the 4th child including him were very sad for some unknown reason even tho Toji managed to get Nerv to help his sister if he agreed to pilot the next Robot/Eva so i have no clue why was he so sad.

After that it was Shinji that pissed me off, man i tried to sympathize with him as much as i could but holy shit is he annoying and idiotic sometimes, i can only forgive him so many times that he is still a child, etc. but why was he unable to fight the eva/angel is beyond me, he could at least try to destroy its legs and arms so the enemy cannot fight back at least, but noo, he just stayed there doing nothing but crying again choosing to die instead of even trying to fight back? disgusting... terrible writing.

Literally the only way to save the human inside these eva monsters that run out of control was to just fight back and try to incapacitate it so the enemy would be unable to fight back and do any more harm, but i guess that's too much logic for Shinji.

Oh almost forgot, Shinji for some reason thinks he was the one that almost killed Toji, Even tho he was not in control of the robot anymore, weird right?

_Episode 19:

I liked and disliked it at the same time, for once Shinji actually grew some balls and started to make up him mind and do his own things choosing his own path, but on the other hand Shinji was 100% in the wrong unfortunately the entire time.
Everything was his fault for being a baby in the first place for not fighting and doing his fucking job.

So it turns out those eva robots were actually alive all along and had their own mind, but this is not like the first time this eva went berserk to save the day once more, its like the writers didn't really know how to get out of any hard situations so their only choice is to make eva go berserk, it kinda gets boring to be fair.

And what is up with all this overly dramatic stuff and reactions, its like all those military people have never seen any kind of carnage before, like wow, look this monster is ripping the other monster apart, so horrifying.., "i am gonna puke and be surprised right now", like really? what are those military people? little kids?

_Episode 20:

Literally nothing happened in this episode, waste of time, i just stared at pictures and gifs, nothing related to the story either,I have to admit its something amazing how the makers of this anime can make an entire episode using 90% pictures and gifs and trying to call it animation.
Ok this anime has a huge problem with putting a picture or gif to stay on the screen for a very long time while some people people talk in the background, at first it was kinda ok-ish but it started getting annoying.

_Episode 21:

Did they just throw almost the entire exposition of the anime in 1 big episode at once? yes they did, was that stupid? yes it was, you know whats funny? there are lots of things left unanswered somehow.

_Episode 22:

Well what can i say really, i 100% understand and feel Asuka, i can see why she is like that and why she keeps being like that, she is a very alive character like most of the characters in this show, they are very real, the problem is they exhibit so many negative traits of the human being without them growing out of them, instead they somehow manage to make them even stronger, forcing the viewer to either try its best to relate with the characters and try to forgive them or they will without a doubt start hating them, what i am trying to say is that everyone has bad moments and days in their lives, everyone has problems, everyone has terrible events that happened in their childhoods (some more terrible than others).
But that doesn't mean you should keep going on the same path of negativity and depravation, the same path of destruction and rage, people should and most people will grow out of those states and evolve their characters, unfortunately that does not happen in the course of this anime, which is why i can say i really hate this show so far, beside many other flaws, the characters of this show, especially the main ones are just terrible...

_Episode 23:

Another overly dramatic garbage episode with idiotic moves from Nerv again, why are they sending evas one by one to fight the angels all of a sudden when they have 3 evas ready to fight? is like they are asking for something bad to happen, and another thing is why the fuck is nobody helping these kids with their mental problems? wasn't that the job of Nerv as well, to make those kids be mentally stable to be able to fight the angels? At least we find out that Rei was a clone this ep, but then all the clones are killed, except the one that is still in the hospital.

_Episode 24:

They just introduced the most interesting character in the show so far and they killed him in the same episode he was introduced, what can i say well done, 10 out of 10 writing ladies and gentlemen.

Like what was the purpose of his character even in this story? what did he accomplish? he tried to be a friend to Shinji i guess? then he went to see that shit "Adam" angel underground, spout out some more nonsense that nobody understands and then he decided to die without a fight.

And again what is up with those big pauses, nvm we all know what is up with them, this gag represents the whole show:

Studio: We're running low on our budget
Animator 1: shit what do we do?
Animator 2: idk just put in a single frame and stretch it to like 2 minutes...
studio: ???
studio: profit

And another thing i find hilarious is the hidden reason why most of the main characters/scientists are working on Nerv, and that is of course to fuck each other and have some sort of weird retarded relationship, because that's what intelligent people do.

_Episode 25 & 26:

Rip budget i guess, i can say i liked the last few minutes of the last episode from a feel good perspective of the world, but lets be honest here, they lost all sense of logic, plot and meaning with those last episodes, nothing more to be said really, gg.

_Summary

I think i have a few words to describe this anime perfectly after watching it:
This is "Everybody is so fucking miserable. Everybody is broken,Everyone is sad and emotionally deranged" the anime.

Another piece of mind of how this anime can be described would be the following:

"I think the reason why these episodes (last episodes of the show) confuse and upset people so much is that they've abandoned any semblance of a real plot. At this point, they've become incoherent exposition for depression, loneliness, and self loathing. The character's in this series also haven't undergone any real development. We've seen what kind of people they are and we're now witnessing the source of their dispositions, but they haven't actually changed or improved as people. This is frustrating especially because every single one of them have extremely annoying character flaws that I'm sure we can relate to on at least some level. I can't call this good story telling, or even say that its effective in conveying a particular message. But I'll admit that its commendable that they attempted to tackle the topic of mental health during a time when anime was mainly focused on lighthearted material."

_Summary of the entire story

So i finished watching the movie and what can i say, a complete disappointment, once more there is so much new information and the narrative is all over the place,i thought by watching this movie i will get an "ending" to the whole series, but unfortunately that did not happen, pretty sad, but this is what this entire series represents, sadness.

I think i came to the realisation why this series as a whole is being praised by so many people as a work of art, "a masterpiece", because is literally the same thing like those stupid abstract paintings that have only 1 or 2 colors on the entire canvas and look like there were made by a little child or like that recent "piece of art" the Banana duct taped on the wall, the so called modern art, like if i literally present you with a piece of shit, and some people will come and start describing the piece of shit as if is a masterpiece because "the way it undulates represents the spiral of divinity or that its color of brown represents the earth and the entire planet" or some bullshit like that.

Those are the same exact people, aka elitists, that watched this shit anime/movie as a whole and started spouting this kind of stupid nonsense straight out of their ass, because in their wicked mind being super abstract and having the plot go all over the place like a crazy monkey and having one of the worst type of characters in the world is Actually.... wait for it... a masterpiece.... AND if you do not see it as such as we scumbag elitists see it then... you must not fully understand the HIDDEN meanings (that only we can see it, cuz you know, we were born with shit in our eyes)... Just disgusting.

After i finally finished watching the anime and the movie i can say this... There is no doubt that Neon Genis Evangelion is THE MOST OVERRATED anime/story in human history! case closed.

Don't get me wrong, i approve of the idea that anything made by a living being can be considered art, the big difference is the fact that not all works of art are actually good, heck, most of them have as much value as a dump, the problem comes when the piece of dump is being praised by a certain amount of people and its whole image is getting distorted into becoming something that is not, and that is the main issue.

My rating for this anime + the movie as a whole is:

Objectively = 6
(Looking at the media without being influenced by personal feelings or opinions)

Subjectively = 2
(How much i really enjoyed it as a whole)

Total average score = 4
