Review of A Place Further Than The Universe
SHORT REVIEW WITHOUT SPOILERS *This is very short and I didn't explain much nor did I touch into all major plots because I had to write this very quickly as to not upset my father because I'm supposed to be downstairs right now.* Many subconsciously agree that darkness/sadness makes fiction note-worthy and emotionally provoking. A Place Further Than The Universe disproves this; it was a truly note-worthy and an especially provoking piece of fiction that can not be characterized as exclusively sad. Although there were sad moments, as there are with all things, the happiness of the journey was the main focus. As Hinata said, “That’s(barfing) fine. That’s part of the journey, too.”
This is a journey of four girls with seemingly no correlations, but then again, all humans have some correlations. Kimari wants to enjoy her teenage years by breaking out of her shell. Shirase is her ticket because she is destined to go to Antarctica to discover its beauty because her mother loved it there. Hinata works at a convenience store and is down for a trip to Antarctica. About to fail their mission to get a ride to Antarctica, Yuzu becomes their ticket. She is traveling to Antarctica because she’s an idol sent there to report what it’s like.
Story: 9
A journey worth enjoying. Personally, it took me an embarrassing amount of time to get through the first 8 episodes, so I can't explain in-depth about all the major plots. I can tell you this is the best slice of life I have ever seen, and it completely shattered my expectations. What is better than a slice of life following the journey of a lifetime?
When the sad parts do come, they are demolished and overcome by friendship. I know what some may react to that: "The power of friendship is cliche and bad plot armor!" But it is not plot armor in this series; it is reassuring and the whole point of the show.
Art: 9
Although it doesn't have the best graphics and detail, it still works perfectly with this show. If you didn't want to go to Antarctica when seeing the scenery, maybe you should watch it again.
It was fun to watch and I had no problems with it. It was cute.
Sound: 9
I never listen to sound much, but it invoked some feelings inside me. The intro was nice, and the background in some deep scenes added a nice touch.
Characters: 10
Each character had explored depth, motivations, personalities, and more. They were the best thing in this show. They were all quite likable and reasonable. There was no main villain in this show which was refreshing from the content I normally consume.
Enjoyment: 9
Since I watched this show over the span of a couple of months, I lost a lot of memories from the earlier episodes. I can say it was very enjoyable and inspiring. It is an amazing break from dark and twisted stories, and it reminded me that philosophy is woven into every story and can be happy and inspiring.
A beautiful and inspiring show. I encourage you to watch it.
