My Cultivator Girlfriend · review
I feel like I just watched a speed run of every shoen anime smashed together and blended into a tasteless paste. It's like they worked off a trope list, everything is just fine. back stories kind of just thrown at the wall. art was good, some scenes were great actually (although conflicts and fight scenes were like a mix of kung fu by wire live action style and old superhero cartoons). I guess there is a cultural divide on how the Chinese look at relationships, but it was hard to understand motives of characters past the plot armor. I will say one thing aboutthe rushed pace, at least I didnt have to suffer through filler or moments designed to pull emotion that would have been a failure if the emotional depth of these characters is evidence. the premise is cool, but it definitely watches like a middle school fanfic reads. the MC is literally a duality of idiot and bran flakes. nothing wrong with it, I just fell for the hype from the few YouTube videos it was featured in, and got burned this time. It has a few moments that if cherry picked make it look fantastic. maybe the creators will hone their craft and make something great in a few years.
edit ~ wrote this before the final fight scene, and while it stands I will say the ending was decent. not great, but the cartoon fight was replaced by some decent action, the plot twist was present but not as hard hitting as i think they were going for, and the MC saving the day didnt feel forced so it wasn't an unfulfilling ending even if it was lacking in flavor
