Review of Wonder Egg Priority: My Priority

First off, let's give a round of applause to all of the reviews that say "I don't understand why this episode gets all this hate", because they are massively missing the point. They throw around accusations that a recap would be any reason for poor reviews (as though fans of WEP didn't know how to just skip it), or that everyone just didn't "get it". While there are some people who missed things, I promise you that most of these reviews did get it, and you'll see that if you actually read them. Their criticisms are valid, and none of the "these people are justwhining" accusations will make them invalid.

So let me get to the core of criticisms of the criticism. I read someone compare the WEP Special to some of anime's most intriguing open endings that leave the interpretation up to the viewers. I promise you, this was NOT one of those. Nothing in the WEP Special made you think deeply, it was all surface level plot twists and poor writing. You want to make your own deep meaning out of it? That's cool. We humans can get enjoyment out of the crummiest things (sidenote, you know there are actually legitimate fans of My Immortal, that terrible Harry Potter fanfic?), but creating a meaning built out of tiny flashes of plotlines does not mean it was a good story.

The problem with arguing that it had any thought-provoking merit at all is that the writing did not give any space to the twists. Where the humanity of secret AIs could have been an interesting thing to consider with a fleshed-out story, when thrown in as a "twist", it becomes nonsense. Where friendships being forgotten, falling apart in crisis or just drifting away could have packed an emotional punch; with no build up, it's just a handwave in order to get to where the story had to end.

In general, like what you like, people. But don't confuse an intriguing story point for good writing, as good writing is entirely in the execution. A meaningful story is in the execution, and this the execution of the WEP special? Well, it was that other type, where they totally killed it.
