Devilish Darlings: Portal Fantasy · review

tl;dr: A manga with nice art of devil girls but that beyond that has nothing of value. The premise of this manga is incredibly generic. Average high school student Keitaro is suddenly pulled into a new world and wants to go home. And that’s about it. The most unique aspect of this manga is probably how little there is to it. Like normally with such manga there’s some reason the protagonist is in the world he’s been teleported to such as defeating some sort of major threat or getting involved with the politics of the world or what not. He’s also usually given or already hassome sort of powers that make him stand out in some way. But nope, the world is running just fine and everyone, even the zombies, are super nice so there’s no need for any sort of hero, not that he could be one anyway because he’s a completely normal human guy without anything special about him in the slightest. The original Japanese title if I’m understanding it correctly (which may not be the case because I’m not entirely sure about my interpretation of ススメ) essentially means Onwards to Life in a New World which is generic as it can get.

That’s why I’m fine with the localized title, Devilish Darling Portal Fantasy, because it highlights the only other element of the manga to give it any personality, devils, or more specifically cute half devils. Upon arriving in the new world Keitaro encounters a half devil named Nia who wishes to make babies with him, because half devils can only mate with humans and humans are incredibly rare in that world. He also encounters another half devil named Rosette that wants the same thing. It’s really not that serious though since neither really seems to be trying all that hard. The manga is the three doing various things. There’s a bit of romance. There’s a bit of friendship. There’s a bit of comedy. There’s a bit of action. And there’s a decent amount of ecchi, though not as much as I expected to be honest. Still the art is good and works really well with the character designs and framing for it to be pretty enjoyable to look through. Considering how short it is, the art was enough for me to consider the manga worth reading despite the complete lack of substance.
