Review of Haibane Renmei
Haibane Renmei is another classic from Yoshitoshi ABe (one of my favorite writers). It's a show that focuses on guilt, and sin, and redemption. It follows beings called Haibane with halos and small gray wings. They are born into a town surrounded by walls. Rakka awakens to this world from a cocoon without memories of her past. There are rules for the Haibane they are forbidden to leave the village or go near the walls surrounding it. Along with that, there are strange disappearances of the Haibane called their "Day of Flight." The focus of the show is forgiveness. It's not enough to ask adivine being to forgive you, the only way to be at peace is to be forgiven by somebody you care about. It's a more straightforward message compared to a lot of the writer's previous works.
