Review of Memories
Overall I'm giving it an 8 even though each short was markedly different from another in terms of its quality and enjoyment factor. Magnetic Rose is amazing and definitely a must watch. It's a ghost, space love story! Only anime can pull off such a crazy combo. Easily an 8 or 9 out of 10. I wish they would have made it a full length picture and just scrapped the other two shorts or at least the 2nd one. Stink Bomb...bombed. The beginning was okay and I enjoyed its soundtrack. But dear lord, the main character...sheesh. "I don't have a girlfriend to nurse me backto health so I'm just going to come into work with a terrible cold and infect all my co-workers." How adorable. Does the main character not realize that he's an adult and should be able to nurse himself back to health like every other adult on earth? I know he's supposed to be ditz but he was just really unlikeable and I didn't mind seeing him crash on his bike. Also, I don't believe that such a highly experimental drug would just be lying in the open for any employee to have access to. I know this one's supposed to be a comedy but it didn't come off that way at all for me. I ended up skipping to the end because I couldn't bear watching any more of it. It was incredibly stupid and boring. Even wild plots require some logic especially if it's based on a true story. It's supposedly based on the Gloria Ramirez case- except it makes no sense how the infected person would be fine. Gloria Ramirez passed away very quickly due to her exposure yet the infected protagonist in the film is supposedly just fine and everyone else is dying horribly. Where's the logic in that? There are many other incredibly elements in the film.
The shortest of the bunch, the last one, is a dystopian antiwar critique and for that reason I appreciated it. It seems to have taken inspiration from Nazi Germany- which is obvious due to the "heil" segment and the ultra militaristic society. Don't kid yourself- America is militaristic nation- it's just not as obvious.
