Review of Kokoro Connect
I don't know what I was expecting from this anime, but it definitely wasn't what I got. My main issue with this anime wasn't the characters or the plot, but rather what was lacking. What I mean by that is it was missing an element of story and excitement that it would've benefited from. For example, you're going into this anime knowing that these kids are going to switch personalities with each other, right? The anime should explain why that's happening, don't you think? But it doesn't. It gives you a vague idea as to how this phenomenon is happening, but it doesn't tell youwhy. That's the reason I couldn't fully enjoy this anime. No matter what happened in the plot or with the characters that I enjoyed, I was still left wondering what the bigger picture was.
That being said, the overall story wasn't bad at all. It conveyed a nice message about friendship and what it means to be there for the people you care about. I do think that the issues that were brought up throughout the season were brought up a little sporadically, but for the most part, the characters all had a consistent, logical motive behind whatever actions we were seeing from them. They weren't as developed as they should've been considering the fact that we, as the audience, were supposed to be really connected to them, but they weren't completely flat either.
I would definitely describe this anime as above average, but I think the weirdness of the backstory made it a little bland to watch at the end of the day. I wouldn't come back to it, but if you're interested in darker anime like Future Diary or even Death Note, you may find yourself a little bit interested in this. Though it isn't as dark as those anime, it does have those elements. I won't be coming back to this one, but it wasn't a waste of time. That pretty much sums it up.
