Review of Kokoro Connect

NOTE: I will be talking merely about the 13 episodes presented in kokoro connect, and not about the remaining 4 episodes. I will also include some SLIGHT spoilers, so if you haven't watched the anime don't read unless you don't mind getting spoiled. Now, I will preface this by saying that this is my first review. I haven't ever really put much thought into rating an anime, so therefore I have thought a bit about this. First off, this is by no means a bad anime. 7 is good. However, there were a lot of things that weren't executed properly which leave the anime in an"ok-goodish" state. Let me elaborate:

Story (8):
The premise of the story is, in short, that these 5 high school students go through a series of strange, supernatural and unpredictable phenomena that are supposed to force some kind of development between the relationship of the 5 of them. This is an interesting concept, but because of this, sometimes the interactions between the characters can come off as forced, and a bit unnatural. Well, in short, it's something fun to play around with, but nothing extremely unique, as other anime have done this before.

Art (6-7):
Nothing much to be said here. The art is fair, doesn't have any glaring flaws, but there's nothing unique at the same time. I would say it's fair, maybe a 7 since it's not bad to look at.

Sound (6):
The soundtrack seamlessly blends with the anime, which some people would think that make it really good. However, I'm the type of person who likes more "energetic" or obvious soundtrack in anime, like for example, the soundtrack in anime like charlotte, where the music is a bit more obvious, and not just random piano notes whenever an important scene is happening.
Oh, and I almost forgot, the VAs aren't bad at all, maybe up sound up to 7 because of that.

Characters (5):
The characters are really mediocre. They are extremely unpredictable and can really make me flabbergasted by their decision-making skills at times. Enough to make me scream out loud like "wtf are you doing". An example is when Himeko starts fucking bawling her eyes out in front of everyone after thinking that Taichi was dead because according to the "main villain", he "fell". Compare this to when the whole jumping off the bridge arc happened to Iori, Himeko seemed relatively indifferent, when they're both really similar situations. Characters also make some really stupid decisions or start going off on a monologue about "friendship" and "love" which I just think is stupid, when they're in no position to lecture each other a lot of the times, and the person getting lectured usually just accepts what's being told to them. In short, characters felt unnatural, and interactions between them are unpredictable, which isn't a bad thing in of itself, but the execution of that concept seems really strange in this scenario. They do have their moments though, which is why I didn't give this section a 1 or a 2.

There are also some characters which are just unlikeable and spontaneous like our very much dear to us class rep almost sexually assaulting Iori randomly, and being a "love angel" or something.

EDIT: I forgot to mention how characters are apologizing every 2 minutes in the show and it gets annoying rather quickly. I understand that some stuff you can't control is going on but holy shit it's really annoying regardless

Enjoyment (7):
Regardless of how stupid some decisions can be, I think that the show is still rather enjoyable and slightly above average. It's like those horror movies where the characters make stupid decisions but it's still entertaining. Maybe this is me enjoying it anyways because im relatively new to anime, but I think that the show, regardless of its flaws, was funny.

Overall (7):
There was a lot of untapped potential that could've been explored within the anime. Some interactions were strange, but interesting nonetheless. I would also like to say that if it weren't for the whole "impulses" arc, I would've rated this anime an 8, because that was the arc that I found the most stupid. But oh well. The ending is alright at least, and gives off a nice conclusion that also makes it feel like there's no need for 4 more episodes. I might've missed something, but no matter. That is all.
