Whisper of the Heart is about teenagers trying to find what it is they want to do in the future. The two main characters both try to discover what it is they can do that sets them apart and what they have a passion for. Not all the problems are resolved but it ends on a high note where both main characters have decided to try something and are hopeful for the future. The setting for this movie is suburban Japan and has a lot of interesting roads and pathways that lead to fascinating places. Even common locations like the library become intriguing. Music playsa role in the story and one scene where a group of people are singing and playing a whole song together is one of the most wholesome moments in Ghibli's movie catalogue. Compared to the other character piece in Ghibli's arsenal, this one stands out the most as an understated and relatable journey that juxtaposes magical stories with the harsh realism of academics.
A worthwhile movie for adolescents that have yet to find their path, or those that already have and want to remember how fun it was finding it.
