Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
no spoilers review okay, so. this is really good, but in my opinion, there's more than one way to enjoy it. personally, i feel like i really love all aspects of it, from the story to the art to the characters to all the weird lore. i really, really enjoyed this especially for episodes 24-26, mostly because it's a fascinating exploration of themes like loneliness, escapism and the human condition as a whole. really, it just explores how hard it is to be a person with thoughts. story: 9/10 i love the story with all my heart and i know other's don't because it's really complicated andkind of thrown at you and you're expected to memorize it right off the bat, but it's fascinating to me. it manages to be a kind of sci-fi/mech anime while also being very philosphical and psychologically oriented at the same time, and i think it blends these elements seamlessly.
art: 8/10
the art was always so appealing to me especially in the original TV series and end of evangelion. nothing more to say at it, it was nice.
sound: 8/10
i don't have a great idea of what "sound" means but as for the soundtrack, i ADORE the soundtrack. the opening and ending songs are obviously notable and i never once skipped them, and the soundtrack itself is so beautiful and almost nostalgic in a way. some of the tracks have the feeling of waiting in line for a really cool ride at disney.
characters: 10/10
the characters are probably my favorite element of it all, especially shinji, kaworu and asuka. they're all so complex and explore such important themes and they work so well together contextually. shinji specifically, i think, is definitely one of the best anime protaganists of all time (at least from what i've seen, i compare him with eren from aot). he's incredibly relatable and i love how introspective he is and the view this gives us on every other character, i really did see like i was seeing things from his perspective. he's incredibly well-written and, while not always likeable per se, he never failed to be interesting and an overall awesome character. he explores the themes of escapism and loneliness and embodies these the best through his introspection that's common throughout the series. i find him extremely relateable and i understood him very well.
specifically one of the best themes i think explored through the characters is hedgehog's dilemma. this is the idea that hedgehog's have spikes, so they can't get too close to each other for warmth or they'll hurt one another. so, they either be close and hurt each other, or stay isolated and become cold. the series essentially says that this is much like people are, staying lonely to keep themselves from being hurt. i'm not going to lie, a lot of elements like these kind of ended up changing the way i see things in the world.
enjoyment: 10/10
yes.
