Review of Attack on Titan: Final Season - The Final Chapters
A brief introduction: I will try my best not to spoil anything about the anime. This is solely my opinion so don't consider everything I say certain. This anime is the ultimate dilemma of which is more important. The journey? Or the destination? If you choose the first option then you will rank it generously. If you lean on the second option you will probably hate it for its ending. This review is based on the whole anime but it heavily focuses on the ending. My review will be about the following factors that I consider more valuable for this anime: Anime Adaptation, Characters and Plot. ANIME ADAPTATION: 8/10.As an anime adaptation I have to give a lot of credit to MAPPA animators, music composers and the voice actors because they all did a terrific job. The anime is far superior to the manga. It is so good that you focus on how well a scene is executed and you completely ignore how garbage the plot is at certain points. The only downside related to the anime adaptation is the fact that they kept splitting the final season into smaller parts instead of making it a whole season and also I am not font of the censorship in some parts.
CHARACTERS: 6/10.
I have some mixed feelings because I really like some characters and they had a lot of potential but the way they ended up was a mess. There are a lot of characters, so I will talk about the four most important ones: Eren, Mikasa, Armin and Levi.
Eren: Our protagonist has a smooth character development from a reckless boy to a cunning man. The only problem is his decision making process. It always has some consequences.
Mikasa: In my opinion she is a very poorly written character considering her screen time and her position in the story. She has little to no development until the final episode. Her decisions don't make sense after a certain point.
Armin: He is the clever guy. His development is okay. He thinks carefully before acting and his thought process and decision making is consistent. His progress goes from a boy that is always afraid to a man that has some leadership capabilities. If he was the protagonist he would end the anime single handedly and earlier.
Levi: Most AoT fans have him as their favorite character and I can't disagree with them. He is edgy and op. His edginess is justified and he always backs up he op-ness. I think the author didn't treat him well at some point but at least he is probably the most consistent character in the show.
PLOT: 4/10.
I believe the plot is the most important thing in this show. In terms of action I have no complaints. There is plenty until the end. But the way the story progresses near its ending is horrendous. The reason I rank it so low is because of its rushed and poorly written ending. Otherwise I would give it an 8/10 or higher. The plot as a whole is engaging and it's consistent until 80-85% of it is unfold. Afterwards it goes downwards. There are two main reasons for that.
First reason: Expectations but no delivery. For the most part of the anime the author created some situations in which he would built up expectations about the characters and there was always a pay-off. Every single character had a major or minor role and they would always deliver. That wasn't the case for the ending though. The author created much higher expectations but there was little to no pay-off. Some characters weren't used enough or they were used unfairly. As a result it felt totally underwhelming.
Second reason: Plot convenience. The author wanted his story to reach peak fiction levels and he kept adding more variables. Some of them were introduced pretty late in the story and were never built up enough. They were outside of the domain of AoT and when they were added they messed up the story. He also introduced the viewers to some elements that were non-existent for the most part. Some options that would benefit the plot weren't used enough and some situations didn't make sense at all. There were a lot of ways things could have ended but because there were these ass-pull variables the author's ideas were poorly executed.
TL;DR: Attack On Titan is an exciting journey with a really poorly written and underwhelming ending. To put it in another way Attack On Titan is an excellent idea that was thought by the wrong person. That is the most accurate and brief description I can give to any anime viewer about AoT.
