Review of My First Girlfriend is a Gal

Never have I watched a show of any kind; anime or otherwise, that was so utterly without merit as Hajimete no Gal. I'll keep this review fairly short as it only really serves as an attempt to deter other innocent passers by from getting tricked into watching this complete travesty of creative entertainment. There's basically no plot, the characters are all completely unlikable, the art is bland, everything about it is incredibly cheap. I understand that a lot of anime fans are into cute girls in the shows they watch, but there are plenty of other shows out there with cute girls in them thatalso have some semblance of artistic integrity. Steer Clear.

Another point I think worth making is that as a westerner that's into anime, one has to be fairly open minded when it comes to some of the cultural differences present but I'm calling BS on this one. There's always a line, and for me trivialising and even at times glorifying a character that is basically a grade 1 paedophile is so far beyond that line. I understand that the Japanese attitude to younger girls is a little different to ours and I'm basically ok with that, but I challenge anyone to argue that creating a character that explicitly lusts after girls aged in the single digits is acceptable in any corner of the world. It was totally deplorable and wholly uncomfortable to watch.

At the time of my writing, this show scores roughly a 6.5/10. Given the fact that I scored it a 1 that must mean that two other people must have scored it at about a 7. given the breadth of bad reviews it tends to suggest that a fair few out there actively enjoyed this show. I've usually felt pretty at home within the anime community but that idea that this show isn't occupying the dregs of the rating system makes me pretty suspicious of the community as a whole. It's difficult to imagine anyone sensible could like something as dire; both ethically and creatively, as this steaming pile of animated faeces.
