Review of Parasyte: The Maxim

[MINOR SPOILERS] I have mixed feelings about this series. I have to note that I am a type of man who rates anime based on general enjoyment. To me, it feels like it wanted to do several cool things but never really got them right and eneded up as a very good action series, but nothing more. It tried to incorporate some darker themes and psychological/philosophical topics into the show but different elements weren't linked to each other on a sufficent rate. There were some really cool concepts: questions about the true nature of humanity, about psychological profile of a prey, there was even a romancething - but they all were kinda separated from each other and didn't seem to really influence the decisions the MC made. The male lead, Shinichi, didnt stand out in any way, and the supporting characters were featureless. Migi, the MCs hand, was the best thing tho, cynical, logical, quite cruel at times - he was really genuine. Romance thread with Murano was lackluster and, to me, had little impact on the show, the whole relationship with her was just dull. On the brighter side of things - the OP song is wonderful. Dont get me wrong - i think it really does well as an action series - it is quite well paced and stuff. I just feel that it could have been a 10/10 anime if the deeper themes and romance it incorprated were executed properly.
